I have seen those kinds of lock rings before. In fact, I once tried to find a photo to post to prove to Mike Stone.

Neil Curtis used to have a truck with those kind of lock rings. He brought it to the rally a couple of years.

I never had much interest at the time, so I never looked at them real close. Later I wondered if these were special rings to adapt 9.00X16 tires to 5.5 Budd wheels, but it sounds like you have ruled that out.
