I thought the reason that Obama wanted Chrysler to merge with Fiat is they were the only ones interested. Or at least the only ones seriously talking at the moment.

This is not a situation where Chrysler can wait for a better offer, if nobody else steps up then Fiat gets them by default.

My thinking is that Ford can maintain themselves with their current credit line, but they can not get more credit to buy Chrysler.
