Then I guess the political calculation is: The more people I get on MY dole, either the dole of welfare and medicaid, or the dole of having a union job in a government-owned company, the more people will vote for me when I'm up for re-election. It probably seems as simple as getting dogs to follow you around by giving them dog biscuits now and then.
Lord knows if it was Republicans doing anything that remotely threatened UAW jobs, like telling GM to renegotiate its labor contracts, we'd be hearing no end of wailing and gnashing of teeth. This is one case where I'm sure a lot of congressional Republicans are glad it's the Democrats' problem.
