About 40 years ago, I parkerized a WWll Springfield 1903-A1 rifle that I sporterized for white tail deer hunting in the Adirondacks. Chose parkerizing over blueing for its non-glare surface. I purchased the chemicals from an ad in American Rifleman magazine. As far as in gunsmithing, there were two very important notations to the process: 1) Absolutly no,none, zip, metal surface contamination of any kind what so ever 2) Very even heat distribution is required through out the chemical bath. I made a mild steel tough with a series of three natural gas burners from an old kitchen range. Through experimentation, I found you could achieve a finished color from a dark green to black by varying time and temperature. I just now compared the Springfield with a .300 Savage that I had blued, and my impression is that the parkerizing is much more durable than the blueing. The Savage shows signs of wear, whereas the Springfield shows none.
