The original bolt on hitches were a pintle hitch(heavy duty)and an adjustable drawbar hitch made for lighter duty for pulling farm wagons and trailers.
The pintle hitch is a military type made for pulling a trailer that has a lunette (ring) on the tongue. The adjustable drawbar had the more conventional hookup using a bolt or pin to attach the trailer to the drawbar.
The pintle hitch is getting harder to find as new ones are no longer available, but good used ones are seen for sale ever so often.
