Changing the diff case using old gears should NOT require playing with pinion depth,,, if it didn`t howl before then it will be good. I think what the guys are saying is check everything while it is down. It is common practice with some technicians to check the tooth pattern before dissasembly & after just to avoid comebacks.
Is that marking on the crown gear superfitial??? looks ugly in the pic
