NOS parts

Ok, this is my first dealing with really true NOS parts. I got two u joints and they are wrapped with the waxy, greasy paper stuff. Never seen it before, heard of it once, but forgot what its called.

How do i get all the stuff off, or do i leave it on? Is it grease?
