How broken is the back gear? Can't you fix it? I have an big ancient flat-belt drive that once made parts for donkey engines and clearly worked hard. The back gear had had a couple teeth broken out at some point. I thought it was clever how some long-ago machinist fixed it. In a couple different places he drilled 3 holes in a row across the gear where the broken tooth was, drove three pins in the holes with a tight fit, and then filed the pins to the right shape to match the other teeth. This wouldn't work in a high-speed transmission, but it was perfectly good for the back gear on a lathe.
