Up north here most oil rigs & bridges are sand blasted & then shot with Zinc Rich Endura. It's basically just primer/zinc phosphate only in a fairly high build. A gallon tin weighs more than twice as much as a regular gallon of Epoxy primer.
Way overkill on a truck but I guess if a guy was planning a serious life of off-road on a truck he planned to drive for the next 50 years on the beach, in the salt water & never wash it :)
Most Epoxies are self etching...& on sandblasted steel lasts 10 years in salt water on your US Aircraft Carriers hull without any metal prepping...good enough for me!
