They all have different names, but they are usually a phosphoric acid mix. Adding zinc to the acid leaves a gray tint rather than black, and the zinc adds some protection.
Most prime/paint companies sell their own proprietary mix. I'll betcha if you check your sand blasters primer company, they recommend etching too. Many strippers don't bother.
I did learn that just because the etch is dry, doesn't mean it is done. Depending on the weather, the water can evaporate, leaving a sticky surface. So I spray on another coat of water. Just a mist, so the acid can finish it's job.
I use plumber's lime dissolver. Much cheaper. Diluted 50/50, my 5 gallon bucket of stuff has some impurities in it now, it acts as blueing, leaving parts just about black overnight.
