It may have been something simple like maybe the output shaft angle of the transmission could have been different between L-6 and V-8 powered trucks. To make up for the difference, they may have shimmed the transfer case to remain parallel to the trans, and changed to tapered lift blocks to parallel the pinion shaft.
Would have been cheaper than having two different axle housing weldments.
Just a guess.
