Once again I'm stepping out of my bounderies talking about something I know very little of BUT...
Delco's alternators for GM are not a TRUE one-wire alternator. In order to do that they must be "self exciting" (sounds kinky, doesn't it? : ) You can use the standard alternator as a one wire, but something gets plugged back into itself (the 'F' back into the 'I' or something... I have this stuff written down at home). The true one-wire alternators are very expensive but as I said you can use the normal GM alternator "like" a one-wire, and like Dave pointed out, the RPMs have to be very high to "excite" the field.
