... dry the float out *completely*, and then dip it in a gasoline proof coating - Indian Head gasket maker used to be the weapon of choice. I actually did this once, with so-so results because my cork was not very good to start with. Try to get a good thick coat, take multiple applications.
Indian Head is pretty "old school" a shellac based compound, and the idea was that shellac disolves in alcohol not gasoline. Trouble is, we now have alcohol in our gasoline - not sure if this would work anymore in the modern world. Maybe some more modern compound is available?
