I like to use an old washcloth as a backer for the paper. This keeps me from sanding finger/palm grooves into the paint. Just fold it into a square, and place the paper onto it. Dunk often into fresh water ( some people use soapy water while wetsanding...) I also like to keep a trickle of water running over the area, helps to keep the paper clean, and wash away all the sanded off material.
