The 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton axles are quite different. The axle housings are different. The hubs are also different if I am correct. The differentials axles are different. There is not much that is interchange able.
The 3/4 ton differentials went through a significant change in time. They started with the smaller ring and pinion that is found in the 1/2 ton. The difference is in the spidergears and etc in the 3/4 ton. The 1/2 ton diffs were breaking too easily and they started to strengthen them. There is a progression in the spider gears and housing. They then came up with the 9 5/8 ring and pinion and it had a different diff case and gears inside. I believe that there was one change in the spider gears in the 9 5/8 diff.
The 9 5/8 differential can be used to replace the early smaller diff in the 3/4 tons. You need to add an extra gasket to make it work.
The early 3/4 tons often came with mixed axles. For example they often came with the smaller diffs in the front axle and the larger 9 5/8 in the rear. My Carryall is that way. It appears that the 9 5/8 first came out in the rear axle then in the front as they used existing stock (my guess).
