Somebody's selling a kit on ebay that he says will change 5.83 gears to 4.89 gears on an M37. The price is reasonable, but I have my doubts. It's NOS military from the 1950s. My question is whether it will really do what he says:
"Includes everything to use if you need to replace the 583 gears to the 489 gear change or to repair your diff. includes spider gears long and short shafts, spacers, diff. pins, shimms."
Didn't the military only use 5.83 gears, so why would they have a 4.89 kit? More importantly, isn't it the ring and pinion that determine the gear ratio, not the spider gears? I don't see how changing the spider gears would do anything to change the overall gear ratio.
