Its possible that your experiencing a relief valve issue. The internal relief valve in the PS Pump can/well squeal when in high pressure relief. Since it was ok a week ago and then acted up, I seriously doubt you have a belt squealing due to slipping. A slipping belt does not heal its self and then go bad again.
You also mention you have half turn light (power assist) and the rest heavy steering ( reduced or no power assist), which once again leads me to think relief valve opening early and or sticking.
If you still think its the belt squealing, get a can of belt dressing and shoot it ont he belt. That will/should stop and belt slip as long as you have proper tension on the belt.
I have rebuilt PS pumps, but never rebuilt a box. No special tools are needed for a saginaw type PS Pump.
