The old John Deere Model D had a 2cyl 501 cu in motor compression 5.7 to 1 (?). these motors ran on distillate, gas oil, bunker fuel, stove oil even gas. To get the heavy stuff to burn you got your engine good and hot running on gas (2 tanks) then switched to the cheaper heavy fuel. They used water injection to control ping. Lantz and Field Marshall had 1cyl tractors that ran on any low quality fuel. As long as you could get them to fire the steam would improve the fuel economy.
