The reason to run very short beads — and ALLOW COOLING between short beads — is that if you run a long bead, when it cools it will put big stresses in the casting and likely make it crack a new way.
It is also critical peen the bead with the pointed end of a chipping hammer as it cools, that helps counteract any contraction that may tend to occur.
The nickel rod is great stuff, and is nicely machinable.
