Conventional wisdom is to not use hypoid oil in synchro trannies because the additives will corrode the bronze synchros. If your '52 still has its crash box, it shouldn't hurt.
I may regret it, but I've been using 85/140 hypoid oil in most of my gear boxes on most of my rigs because I bought 6 5-gallon buckets of it cheap from the DRMO years ago, and another 55 gallon drum from a yard sale. It's really too thick in light trucks and I wouldn't recommend it. As far as synchro damage, I did tear down one tranny that had had it in for a couple years and didn't see any damage yet, but that doesn't prove anything.
