all those old manual timing specs are from when gasoline had about as much octane as coleman white gas. I time my flaheads at around 6 or 7 degrees BTDC. 89 octane pump gas is like rocket fuel for a flathead. ;/). I would replace those springs if your concerned about them they are probably bad.
