Keith, you're not going to believe it, but I had to put our German Shorthair down last month. "Aspen", was born in Colorado and brought home as a puppy on a Delta flight to Atlanta, July of 1992. She had cataracts and was 80% deaf, but would race our other dog to the door in the mornings and the table scraps at night--this until the week she quit eating.
The characteristics you describe in your dog must be classic for the breed. I KNOW your loss. She was like one of the kids.
