I agree with Paul, from the description you gave it sounds like the housing integrity is comprimised. the pins that hold the trunion bearings are welded into the housing. I bought a truck with a broken stub axle and the pieces chewed the weld off the back of the one of the pins and the pin was loose. Change it out. sleep well.
