o/t battery tender question

Anyone have any recommendations or experience using battery tenders? My backup generator for the house is 36 volts but doesn't have provisions for an alternator to keep the batteries charged . Do the tenders run all the time or only when the batteries need to be "topped off"? Are they a good idea? Thanks, Jim.
