Fuel gauge- Anybody tinker? ohms? lost magnetism?

I've got two dash gauges, one black, one gray. They both seem to work over the approximate same range of ohms- 100 ohms makes them move to full, 1000 ohms makes them move drop to about 1/4 then plummet to the peg. I'm wondering if they lose their magnetism, or....?

Anybody know the range of the senders? Difference between 6v or 12v?
