57 Dodge Manual O/D Unit Fit P/Wagon?

Stumbled on a 57 Dodge pickup the other day with a 3-on-the-tree transmission, and a manual overdrive (handle pulls out of dash). Anyone know anything about this set-up? Would it work on a 420, or any other Dodge gearbox? The truck has the original 315 poly in it.
