Hi guys,

Well since last time I was on here and our '48 PW was running fine. took it out to play in the little snow we had a couple of weeks ago and it started acting up again. Darn old truck is back firing through the carb under load but runs fine out on a straight stretch of road until we start to tackle a hill, give her a little gas and pop, pop, pop, pop, then clears out for a little bit and runs fine.

Brought it back to the shop and did a compression check and all cylinders read between 50 and 60 lbs compression. What is a good compression reading for a healthy engine?

Would a worn out carb cause this problem? I have rebuilt the carb several times so maybe it is worn out, might need to get a new one? I need to replace the fuel filters yet but they don't looked plugged.

Checked the plugs nice and clean gaps look good. Checked the Cap and rotor found some corrosion on them and decided to replace them with a brand new matching set. Points looked great. Next went and checked the timing with a timing light, I found the pointer and timing mark but no degrees as rust has replaced them. Where should the timing mark be in relation to the pointer at top dead center? When we flipped the timing light on with the engine running the mark is below the pointer about and 1 1/2"(towards the engine pan). Should it be retarded or advanced? Also how is the best way to unstick the distributor as it won't budge after removing the locking plate screw and trying to turn it by hand? I have sprayed it with PB Blaster, gently tapped on the distributor case and still no movement.

I assume it is a timing problem, Might also be a combination of bad carb and timing, thoughts? as it is only under power, any other suggestions on where to look?

Thanks
Chris Becker
