George,
If the vehicle is less than 15 years old, there are various inspections & added fees, but not complicated. You'll be required to add daytime running lights, French airbag labels, & various other money wasting items.
Older than 15 years & built in North America...no fees & only tax.(Unless it has A/C...there's a $200 fee if your vehicle has A/C)
Technically, you can drive from the US straight to the Canadian border & pay your tax without issues...however...US Customs wants you to Export the vehicle before Importing. That requires added paperwork & 72hrs notice.
The Canadians don't care less whether you have Exported or not...this is a US thing & if the US catch you not Exporting...you're subject to a $5000 fine. They'll usually warn you about that at Canada Customs, then they'll usually tell you that it's entirely up to you & that they don't care if you do so or not, nor do they enforce US policy.
Many, many people drive straight through without Exporting but if you have a spare 72hrs before you arrive at the border...I strongly recommend Exporting.
It's a very simple procedure if you follow the rules & understand them.
