The reason that the pins are soft is because they could be. Warn didn't need them to be harder for this applicaiton. With the total cross sectional area of the pins, and the longer moment arm afforded them, even the soft pins are much stronger than the axle!! You don't have anything to worry about..

I have one set of hubs where one of the pins got deformed. It rendered the hub useless. Use the hard pins, it will be some insurance that the hubs will always work as designed...

As to the comment below that the you might somehow get some good info from the Warn Executives - that is highly unlikely. There is probably no one left at Warn that could provide you with good reasoning or justification as to the design principles employed during the original hub development process. First of all, executives are generally not involved in this level of detail (there are exceptions). Secondly, Warn has sold about 3 times in the last 40 years - so most of the old guard is gone..

They are great hubs. They were built to provide flawless service at an affordable price. They didn't put cost into them when they didn't think it was appropriate.
