It seems to me that the original hub design works very well and for a very long time, if they are cleaned and maintained properly. It seems that the presence of dust and dirt, added to the grease, or the absence of grease, which would contribute to wear of all interior parts is the beginning of the failure. Whenevr there is excessive tolerance, things start moving around that weren't intended to move, and this leads to failure.
