Temp gauge

I at last have the time to install a "correct" temp gauge on the FF. I immediately discovered that the threaded hole in the head of this replacement 230 ('52) is too small for the adaptor fitting for the correct bulb. How much trouble could I get into if I drilled and tapped for the larger adaptor? Should I remove the head or will I cause irreparable harm from metal shavings if I leave it on?
