It is my understanding that cat hunt outfitters prefer to use small caliber handguns on treed cats(i.e 22 mag)as to not knock the dying cat out of said tree into their pack of valuable hounds.That said if you want to stop a cat from eating your livestock or self in an unplanned situation where you are the hunted not the hunter I wouldn't go with anything less than a .32 H&R Mag.(my current walk around the farm gun of choice)but .40 in the drastic plastic(Glock)will handle the cougar and most other unpleasantries in the lower 48..
