A magnum load will get the .22 bullet to the lion faster and from farther away, but will put the same size hole in him, which I doubt is enough to take care of him. Never shot a lion before, so I'm no expert. But shot plenty of woodchucks, and a .22 doesn't always stop them. There are some big time gun guys here, I'm just a weekend plinker, or plunker. Beer can stuff.
