Thanks Dave. I plan to get a few thousand board feet of both hickory and red oak sawn and will let both dry for several months. I wasn't aware the red oak is more water resistant though. I do like the hickory for its hardness/dent resistance. Red oak will look better though.

Do you see a problem with bolting the side strips on other than looks? I already have a row of holes in the bed sides where they must have been bolted before.
