I've also heard of a diesel with broken rings sucking enough oil up past the pistons to rev itself to death. Somewhere I read that it's a good plan when starting up any diesel in uncertain condition to have somebody stand near the air intake with a coat or other heavy cloth to throw over the intake if it tries to run away.
Nevertheless, I still don't understand how an engine can break its crank unless the crank had a bad manufacturing defect in it. It seems to me it would throw a rod before the crank would break, and once it threw the rod, it would stop in a hurry. Are you sure it wasn't something like main bearing cap screws not torqued down, or a crack in the block that kept growing?
