I prefer vacuum gauge timing. Hook your vacuum gauge at the manifold, advance timing to obtain the highest vacuum reading...back timing off about 1 pound of vacuum or until it doesn't knock. It really depends what fuel you run. If you buy Chevron 94 then you can run way more timing than if you're running the inferior grades of fuel.
The beauty of the vacuum gauge is that while you have it hooked to your manifold you can also diagnose many other aspects of how your engine is running.
I have a Snap On $300 timing light but I honestly don't remember when I last used it!
