hi dave, the dana 60 in a front axle application is not that rare. but , it may depend on the year, make, model of the vehicle you are talking about. typically , at least to my knowledge someone correct me if i'm wrong, the 60 is found under the heavy 3/4 ant 1 ton model trucks. front and rear.the 44 was found typically on the 1/2 and 3/4 ton front axle.the 70 was a hd version of the 60. and as rick pointed out the number(i.e. 44, 60, 70 ) should be cast into the reinforcing web on the differential housing. hope this helps.
