Truth or old wives tale?

I remember my father always saying that a car battery should never be stored directly on concrete. It will discharge it. I have heard it from other old timers but it has never made any sense to me. Nonetheless, as a matter of habit, I always throw a chunk of wood under a battery thats staying on the floor any length of time. So, whats the skinny here? Fact or fiction?
