I just got mine out! It was depressing getting there. I got a 4 or 5 foot piece of flat stock that I cut a notch in with a hacksaw. Having the new tube there was great for figuring out where to trim the flat stock to make it fit and hook. Then I tried to hook the old one as farback as possible. Pulling by hand was useless, so I hammered the end into a J shape and whacked that with a big slab of iron floating around in the bed.
At first I felt it simply ripping the top open like a can opener. One lucky moment it caught a strong spot and it came out whole minus a flat piece from the side. That piece fell to the bottom, and I'm going to wait for it to rust into tiny pieces which I hope won't clog anything any worse than the sludge that was in there.
Good luck.
