Hopefully the Army has finally gotten it's act together, but the gear in WWII and up to the 70's was completely inferior to what a civilian could buy from a outdoors shop. We frozen, got wet, the jackets, sleeping bags, rain gear and boots were a joke.
I'll take an REI, North Face or Pantagonia product, jacket, boots and bags and just about any USA made civilian boot, all of the above with Gore-tex, anyday over that stuff.
I know it doesn't look as cool as the military stuff, but I've been there and done that.....
