If you really want to be accurate, the first SUV as well as the progenitor of the 4X4 as a whole is the F.W.D. car of 1910-12. They made more money making trucks so few were made but they were first.
The owners of the company ran a small machine shop in Clintonville Wi. and developed the double Y universal joint that fitted into a ball socket. So the next time you lock the transfer case into 4X4 mode, thank Otto Zachow and his brother-in-law William Besserdich. They made the modern 4X4 possible.
