The friction melts the vinyl, the nails go right in. Then the vinyl cools and glues the nails in. That's why they are so hard to pull. My Dad told me the first coated nails were called "sugar coated". Apparently the coating fed germs- put just one in your mouth and you got the green-apple-quick-steps worse than today's spinach would do you.
