This is a question that you will get many different answers on, and most are probably correct. We all do things different.
I want my load absolutely secure. I use Grade 80 DOT Transport Rated chain and Binders. One chain and binder on each corner over the axle. You can use a piece of rug to keep the paint from chipping. Then I run a Grade 80 DOT Transport Rated chain and binder from the frame to the trailer on each corner. This stops all wallowing of the truck on the springs. I dont want the truck moving at all on the trailer, my trailer and truck are one. It may be super kill, shoot it and stomp on it, but I feel secure, even during an emergency manuver. Plus by using Rated fastenings, in the event of a tragic accident, I have a much better posture in court when the 'expert witness' describes how a load is properly bound. I realize its not what you asked about straps, but this is how I do it.
