I worked for a contractor after I got out of the army. He thought it real funny to juice me and would set me up when doing electrical work. I learned fast as I don't look good with curely hair.
The company that made the fan went belly up, and when I called their 800 #, got a sex line. HA! I ended up going to Walmart (we get an employee discount cause the Mrs works there pt) and ended up with 2 replacement fans and a 5' wood step ladder for $45.00 (tax included).
It turns out these are the exact same fan as what we had with a different company name (even the part #'s were the same). The original fans were purchased at Monkey Wards. Their toll # was just 2 digits off of the other company's.
Anywho, after taking the old motor down, I tested it out and it worked fine. I had discovered the ground wire came lose (on the mount) and was hitting the hot at times, thus causing sparks and tripping the circut. We now have a working fan and lights in the kitchen again.
I'll be paying for doing all that work for the next several days, but it was worth it. Boy, do I miss Maynard. I coulda had him doing all the running down to the basement to flip the circut breaker all them times. HA!
