Around here, a lot of the auxillary tanks are not connected to the truck itself and are filled with dyed fuel. They use a transfer pump to fill the truck.
Remember it takes fuel to haul fuel, and the weight of auxilliary tanks with fuel makes the brakes work harder and reduces the payload of your truck.
I'm lucky, I guess. I have to stop more often than the truck needs fuel. One tank is enough.
