A trip to a junk yard will show you how much of a modern car is thrown away for no good reason. Looks to me that many hulks were driven in, when for the cost of a repair, they could have been fixed. But no, lets buy a new car! It's only $25,000. The junkers pay $100 for the old one. Thats $24,900 wasted. How much energy does that represent? How much fossil fuel do I save by driving an old Dodge that gets 10 mpg? Where as, building a car to maintain rather than impress, would keep the majority of the old hulk on the road, saving energy and pollution.

Perhaps we should charge a "new car tax", proceeds of which will be given to owners of older cars to keep all the energy used to build a new car from being expended?
