I copied the Milemarker Hydraulic winch system where the Power Steering Pump powers the winch.
Talked at legth with Milemarker Engineering and also Braden Winch Engineering. I am using a stock PS Pump on my carryall (that was used on GM P-30 Trucks). The engineers suggested I use a Char-Lynn motor with roughly a 2.9 cu in displacement. I had a spanking new Char-Lynn 4.5 cu in motor on the shelf. It was cost effective to use the larger displacement motor (free). As a result, I have a line speed about 10-15% slower than if I were shaft driven, power appears to be equal. Someday, if I locate a Char-Lynn 2.9 cu in motor, I will change it out.
Rebuilding a MU-2 is simple if you have the ability to use tools and common sense. I have a picture by picture rebuild of a Braden LU-4 on my Image Event Site. This is N O T
the same, but the concepts run close to give you an example of what you will be working with. The LU-4 is used on the M-37. By looking at the pictures you can see the differences, however, both are shaft driven. The web address is;

I am quite certain I will power this winch with hydraulic power, a copy of the system on my carryall.
Back in 2000, I asked a question on forum 30 regarding hydraulic winch power. Charlie responded with a great writeup. If the link below does not work, go to the archives, forum 30 (october 8, 2000 at 16:59:31pm Topic is Hydraulic Question)
I have a DVD that Milemarker puts out on testing electric winches vs hydraulic. Lots of your questions will be answered if you request this DVD from Milemarker.
Hydraulic drive will run all day, every day without overheating (same as shaft drive). On conversion trucks, with limited space for front drive shafts, and to save big bucks on PTO's, I am sold on Hydraulic Power. I can run my MU-2 on my Carryall from inside the cab or local at the winch. My winch is always available, no PTO needs shifting. I can toss the HOOK on you at 60 mph and winch you in, or creep in 4x4 and inch the winch as we move.
