Brake drum question

I know this has been delt with here before so here it goes...

From my understanding, the drums need to be turned while on the hubs for the FFPWs for balance purposes. My question is, what changed from this style drum/hub to a newer style truck hub where it doesn't seem to be an issue? Are newer hubs internally balanced to where the drum doesn't need to be turned on the hub?
Just trying to understand the old ways. Any explaination would be great, thanks.
