Often if you back it up for 10 to 20 feet when you take it out of 4 wheel drive. Doing that will usually release the built up pressure on the driveline/gears and it will then shift out of 4 wheel. You may have to do it a couple of times. Basically the guy who is stomping on his in gravel is doing the same thing. The pressure comes from the front and rear not turning at the exact same rate. That is why you never drive in 4 wheel on dry pavement. Wet or uneven ground allows the the pressure to equalize either through tire slipage or when the tires loose road contact through tire bounce on uneven ground.
Bottom line I think you got messed over by a poor design and a dealer who took advanatage of you. Dealers and manufactures tell the techs to replace parts to solve problems not figure out what is really happening then fixing/replacing the problem parts.
