No air cleaner? That says a lot about the former owner. 2" - 3" slop in the brake pedal.. Former Owner, Chapter Two. The former owner apparently did the ultimate NO - NO and adjusted the master cylinder push rod. That rod must allow the MC piston to clear the relief port or - guess what? - pressure will build up in the brake lines and - you guessed it - you will have to "stop and relieve the pressure now and then"
If you had a manual, the problem would be fixed by now. Actually, the M-37 maunal (TM 9-8030) does not show the MC in adequate detail.
Click on the Museum link below, scroll down the Museum main page to the Technical Support section, click on BRAKES, and print out the brake adjustment portion of the civilian manual. You should be able to see the relief port / piston line up through the MC filler cap.
